Monday Memories: Step by Step

One of my favorite places to walk is a short drive from my home.  Walnut Woods Metro Park (the Woods) is a special place to find nature’s treasures along its easy to moderate trails.  The photographs shown with this poem were taken a few days ago.  Enjoy!

Peaceful Walnut Creek meanders along the northern border of park.

Early morning light beckons

Putting on worn hiking shoes

Overcast skies hold back rain

Nature waits with charming views

Driving to a park, the “Woods”

Tranquility always waits

Peace and beauty reaching out

Eager feet, needing no skates

Step by step, walking farther

Park’s vastness, shouting with joy

Around each bend, nature smiles

Many sights and sounds deploy

Morning excursion teases

Birds sing back and forth on cue

Precious blossoms smelling sweet

Coffee can’t top nature’s brew

Time seems to pause with each step

Today’s time comes to an end

Ticket punched for return trip

These “Woods” remain a best friend

A few signs of spring’s early blossoms still can be found, but they will soon be gone.

Monday Memories: Wild Violet

bloom blooming blossom blur

She returns annually to announce the arrival of spring

Heart-shaped flowers will bring vivid beauty that sings

She loves the cool and damp spring air

Shaded from the sunlight brings no cares

She possesses a cute and dainty look

Green fields invite a walk along a brook

She adores the color purple, dark is best

Sadly, others see her beauty as a pest

She loves to pause in gardens for relaxation

Butterflies seek her as a beautiful attraction

She experienced vigorous growth in her younger days

Ancient Greeks consider her a symbol of love that stays

She meanders now as a traveler seeking only fun

Looking out at a calm creek called Wild Violet Run

There really is a small stream called Wild Violet Run near Pickerington, Ohio in Violet Township, which is located in northwestern Fairfield County.

Finally, spring bursting free

Playful nature shares its toys

At long last, wintertime flees

Every blossom spreading joy

Until needed later on

Winter’s layers stored away

Coats, scarves, hats, mittens . . . all gone!

Cooler clothing on its way

Every day, more green arrives

Essence of freshly cut grass

Sun leads chorus of high fives

More sparkling than clearest glass

Clouds away on vacation

Big sky forming overhead

Gardens erupt with color

Warmer days racing ahead

Farmers ready to sow crops

Stewards of earth’s blessed land

Fed with sun and rainy drops

Autumn’s harvest soon at hand

Springtime Blues

Photo by Misael Silvera on Pexels.com

Ceaseless, overnight rain

Early morn’s swollen creek

Flowing outside its bank

Nature ready to tweak

Smaller tributaries

Never to be left out

Gathering their volume

Flood’s growing runabout

Cloud’s river of moisture

Lengthy, not finished yet

Forecasting gloomy skies

Weather’s headlines typeset

Sun planning its comeback

But not for day or two

Waiting with humble song

Nature croons springtime blues

Gray landscape waiting

Winter tugging life’s reins

Nature’s heart pulsating

Searching barren plains

Quiet, chilly morn

Spring waiting for its turn

Nature’s melody plays

Growing season yearns

Sun’s beam warming ground

Breath of life springing up

Nature’s waiting comes round

Bursting green’s push-ups

Baton passed along

Winter fading away

Nature’s returning song

Waiting with bouquet

Monday Memories: Spring Arrives

Photo by Skyler Ewing on Pexels.com

The calendar affirms that spring has arrived

Why then did the weather take a snowy dive?

Heavy, wet snow arrives overnight

Is this some terrible joke, not right?

Instead of spring, we now experience deep snow

Where is the snow shovel when we need it now?

Well . . . Have no concern at all, for you see

A poet can write about most anything to be

Thankfully, there is really no snow to spoil spring

When will warmth replace winter’s frosty sting?

Even the songbirds remain quite bunched up for now

On powerlines high above, they sing and take a bow

Again, the calendar sets the date of a new season

Why should we believe the date for any reason?

This past winter has indeed soured our attitude

When will Mother Nature give us some latitude?

Seasons Eternal

Mankind hurtles toward unknown

Nature’s seasons relay what’s known

Autumn prepares for transition

Holding off winter’s ambition

Both man and nature look ahead

Unearthing their most common thread

At times, life needs relaxing pause

Forsaking bright lights and applause

Terrain changes to snowy scene

Covering life white, without green

Man growls at cold, numbing weather

Spotting fireplace, warm together

Winter’s snowfall hiding its gems

Waiting for newest, greenest stems

Spring awakens frozen landscape

Encouraging life’s next escape

Man and nature again feel free

Twinkling eyes find each budding tree

Creator’s Spirit, love transcends

Seasons eternal, never end
