Winter’s shadow fades
Morning air sharing warm smiles—
Spring readies comeback

Tree’s empty bird nest
Waiting for newest tenant—
Turning spring’s fresh page

Bravest, greenest shoots
Breaking through quiet landscape—
Spring says, “I’m coming”

Landscape’s stillness breathes
Each treasure waiting beneath—
Warm, snowy blanket

Faithful rising sun
Drawn in by its reflections—
Brr . . . it’s cold outside!

Eager sentinels
Giants seem absent of life—
Tree buds wait for spring

Crystal, clear night sky
Reflecting moonlight’s spotlight—
Postcard’s tranquil dreams

Snowy landscape’s joy
Marked by tiniest hoofprints—
Scene of hope-filled peace

Chilly, early morn
Warming stove works her magic—
Biscuits with honey

Sightseeing from Atlantic to Pacific coasts
Experiencing America, with much to boast
Lady Liberty’s gleaming torch welcomes all
Blazing autumn colors define Vermont’s fall
Appalachians conceal valleys, nestled with small towns
Nashville plays music for biggest “Country” hoedown
Florida’s Everglades house gators galore
Across America’s skies, bald eagles soar
Commanding Mississippi River slices through the land
Florida and California beaches offer up surf and sand
Interstate highways transport autos everywhere
Great Lakes provide a waterway, here to there
New Orleans offering its French Quarter to entertain
To the South, Rio Grande River creates a watery lane
America’s breadbasket reaps harvests from the Great Plains
Loaded grain, freight, and more journey on mile-long trains
Towering Rockies sing of marvelous beauty up high
Visiting out West, appreciating a Big Montana Sky
Seattle’s Pike’s Market, a distinctive place to treasure
California’s redwoods, their height is one to measure
Arid Southwest rains bloom flowers throughout the land
Grand Canyon’s brilliant scenery plays a winning hand
Finally reaching the Pacific coast at long last
The Golden Gate Bridge arrives much too fast

Winter nurtures peaceful scene
Warmest memories roam free
Earth no longer dressed in green
Snow covering every tree
Chimney sends welcoming smoke
Greeting from kitchen’s warm flame
Early morning’s comfy cloak
Cook stove’s crackling wood lays claim
Small cabin nestled in woods
Hidden from anyone’s view
Pantry filled with nature’s goods
Winter’s satisfying brew
Never more perfect setting
Looking up at mountain slopes
Arctic air never sweating
Preserving tomorrow’s hopes
Midnight’s twinkling moonlight beams
Postponing scheduled chinook
Winter’s sketches replay dreams
Precious pages fill scrapbook

This poem is dedicated to the many lives which have come and gone along the tracks of the Great Northern Railroad from years ago. Perhaps you can feel the living spirit still riding the Empire Builder passenger train across the Hi-Line of Montana.

Feeling a bit like heaven
Blessed Big Sky, almost home
Paradise spelled as two words
Riding free, spirit’s train roams
Scanning God’s creative touch
Mountains shaped by nature’s hand
Valleys carved out by rivers
Dreaming of this treasured land
Stirring up past memories
Iron horse roaring at top speed
Long ago, been here before
Coming home, spirits now freed
Flashing by Hi-Line’s vast farms
Cropland caresses these tracks
Golden fields of wheat ripen
Waiting for harvest’s comeback
Fading daylight turns to night
Darkness covers Montana’s peace
Town lights twinkle here and there
Thinking back to life’s past lease
Climbing through Marias Pass
Glacier Park saying good-bye
Big Sky’s wonder never fades
Ageless spirit, dropping by

God’s creation under the Big Sky
Treasured landscape covers this vast land
Immense prairies flow into mountains
Few places on earth looking this grand
Rugged backbone of the continent
Chiseled spine of the Rocky Mountains
Stray mountain ranges dotting the plains
Cascading streams flowing as fountains
Three distinct rivers form its headwaters
Mighty, boundless Missouri River
Eastward, collecting the Yellowstone
Precious mountain rains move downriver
White-tail and mule deer camp in thickets
Pronghorns graze in the midst of grasslands
Mountain valleys gather elk and bears
Ducks and geese pilot into wetlands
Frequently titled the Treasure State
Montana shines under its Big Sky
People flocking to witness its gems
You just might meet a Buckeye nearby

I could probably write something about my native state of Montana every day. It will always be a very special place to me. Watch out, you just might run into a Buckeye returning to the Big Sky.
