New Day
Morning’s warmth arrives
Night’s darkness evaporates—
Brilliant sunrise greets

Wrong Address
Spring’s mixed-up signals
Heavy snow covers landscape—
Misguided showers

Endless Harmony
Nature’s precious gifts
Infinite diversity—
Unified as one

Central Ohio’s Walnut Woods Metro Park is located a short drive from my home. I frequently walk the park, and a recent one inspires this poem. Enjoy these photos taken back in April, 2019.

Alarm clock spurring
Nature park invites
Sweet song birds stirring
This morning’s delight
Sunrise opens sky
Clouds sliding away
Welcomes this Buckeye
Creation’s ballet
Quiet moments smile
Spirit walks each trail
Partner with each mile
Fresh air to inhale
Life’s cherished highlights
Blessed start to day
Nature’s revered sights
Moments filled with play
Joyful heart, rejoice
Walk comes to its end
Creation’s brisk voice
Morning’s steady friend

Alarm clock sleeping in
Saturday morning waits
Lazy minutes calling
Extra coffee’s first mate
Day’s blessed, empty page
Life’s agenda on pause
Batteries recharging
Kicking back, just because
Quiet morning moments
Coffee’s second cup smiles
Never stuck in traffic
Saturday’s endless miles
This truly special day
Sharing its own sunshine
Life’s gray clouds chased away
Loving each hour, so fine
Each week’s favorite time
Carefree pace never shifts
Energized spirit sings
Saturday shares its gifts

Blessed sunrise wakes
World stops its endless spinning—
Tranquility calls

Nature’s sights and sounds
Creation’s rhythm singing—
Pause and soak it in

Newness of each spring
Opening fresh avenues—
Sacred life takes root

Morning arrives, but not really too sure
Mysterious blanket stretches overnight
Thick, silent fog covers, dense and pure
It’s no wonder, not a single soul in sight
Tree tops arise above this soupy fog
Creek bottoms with clouds, so dense
While the sun waits, taking a long jog
Waiting on nature, makes huge sense
School delays pop up on the morning news
Students appreciate an extra hour of sleep
Busses wait, roads totally hidden from view
Headaches for parents, their day in a heap
Calmness and stillness thrive without wind
Street lights linger awhile, as if it is night
Damp, low clouds bring their mist to send
Out of focus, a hazy light ponders flight
Nearby airports close, everyone “socked in”
On the big lake, a lighthouse shines bright
Sky’s ceiling drops lower, gloominess within
Warning all of danger, fog covers the light
Small town’s main street, deserted to all
Pair of tiny car lights, puncture through
Darkness filling with gloom, as it crawls
Local police look out, very little to view
Deciding to wait awhile to do his chores
There is time for another cup of brew
A rancher returns for coffee and more
His wife’s cinnamon rolls, ready on cue
Morning waits, fog thicker than momma’s soup
Better the early birds, hang out in their coop

Looking out kitchen’s window
Hot coffee warming chilled hands
Cherishing deepest blue skies
Thankful to breathe freedom’s brand
Geese fly across nearby pond
Wishing life could be simple
Photo of children smiling
Catching each happy dimple
Sensing morning’s frosty air
Furnace cranks, erasing cold
Listening to nature’s peace
Fewer song birds to behold
Airplane flying overhead
Gliding to scheduled landing
Mankind dances with nature
Asking, without demanding
Looking toward tomorrow
Life’s cards showing all Aces
Feeling blessed beyond reason
Cherished keepsake embraces

Early morning is my preferred time to craft poetry, short stories, and other writings. Occasionally, the pre-dawn atmosphere outside of the kitchen window encourages my pen to just take off and write. There is no real plan or objective, but the words flow until a rough outline is coming together. This poem is a result of such an endeavor, and hopefully you–the reader–will find your place in the verses as well.

Another morning
Alarm clock droning
Sleepy head’s warning
Waking and groaning
Almost hitting snooze
Crawling out of bed
Mind singin’ the blues
Brain needs to be fed
Morning brew ready
Caffeine right on time
Never unsteady
Brilliance set to rhyme
Arriving at work
Second cup in hand
Tackling paperwork
French roast takes command

Sputtering at sunrise
Human engine starts up
Needing its caffeine boost
Always more than one cup
Yes, speaking of coffee
Savor its mountain blend
Aroma-filled goodness
Taste morning’s boldest friend
Body grows accustomed
Medium grade of fuel
Drinking anything less
Makes for a sluggish fool
Life’s experience counts
Paying close attention
Day’s “Five Cup” minimum
Brew’s perfect dimension

Walking in the morning pre-dawn light
Waiting for the sun to resume its flight
Hearing the birds chirping familiar tunes
Feeling happy that spring will arrive soon
Stepping briskly along the charming path
Anticipating the sun bringing a warm bath
Seeing the shadows change and dance
Clearing a mind from its dormant trance
Witnessing God’s immense creation at dawn
Blessing with unique images that it spawns
Dashing in front goes a frightened rabbit
Making his morning visit a welcome habit
Dreaming of walking here each and every day
Picturing a scenic sunrise so appealing to say
Lifting above the distant horizon to bring a delight
Radiating sunrise brightens the morn with its light
This poem was written and published in March, 2019. I frequently walk at two nearby nature parks, and it is always a delight to catch the sunrise (especially if my camera is handy).

Early morning dawn arrives
Missing nature’s boldest light
Covering heavens and earth
Thickest fog masks sun’s headlight
Ghostly, ominous shadows
Cloaking trees by hidden creek
Slithering mist moves unchecked
Nature fills with blind mystique
Stillness surrounds paradise
Witnessing morning on hold
Waiting patiently for change
Nature removes her blindfold
Suddenly, haze disappears
Hailing sun’s brilliant return
Switching on morning’s magic
Thankfully, fog now adjourns
