Humbling Moments

A football team clings to a slim lead with only few seconds to go

Allowing a “Hail Mary” touchdown pass is quite a humbling blow

A traffic reporter drives to work with a great deal of haste

Running into a gigantic traffic jam seals her humbling fate

A coach’s conduct melts down along the sideline of a big game

Watching the other team score, humbles and brings him shame

A harsh winter storm drops the temperature below freezing

Humbled by an empty woodpile and no fire, starts the sneezing

A driver stands humbled as he frets about his emptiness of fuel

Waving at his stalled car, an old man drives quickly past his view

The #1 basketball team tries to hang on with a narrow win

Swishing a 3-point goal, their hopes are humbled and grow dim

An experienced bow hunter has a large bull elk in his sights

Seeing his arrow miss, leaves him humbled and in a fright

On the final hole, a golfer lines up her short putt to finish first

Missing it, humbles her and means less money to put in her purse

A lovely bride removes and sets aside her new wedding ring

Knocking it down the shower’s drain, will humble and sting

A basketball player drives to the hoop to make a winning shot

Falling to the floor, a sprained ankle humbles him and hurts a lot

A delicious, roasting turkey should soon be about done

Forgetting to turn on the oven, humbles one with no fun

A downcast writer sits at a keyboard powerless to write today

Unable to find his thoughts, humbles him with nothing to say

A democracy’s leader utters falsehoods and continues to deceive

Hiding from consequences that will soon humble him to believe

A River’s Journey

photo of lake side

Meandering endlessly and aimlessly it seems

Infinitely pursuing each horizon downstream

The river faces its journey, to the ocean out to the west

Bringing much attention to itself, without taking a rest

Being fed from above, by mountain run-off far away

Roaming bank full and quickly, with not much to say

A friendly, gentle breeze offers cool, refreshing air

Bubbles rising up from a muskrat that doesn’t care

At times, the journey is surrounded by a background of trees

Arriving softly, the whispering wind says, “Please let me be”

Green, lush meadows encroach upon its rocky shore

While early spring flowers burst with color and more

Young willows grow along the river’s flank

Tree roots hidden, invisible below the bank

A large, brown trout rises gracefully above the bubbling water

Meanwhile downstream, mischief abounds with a pair of otters

An isolated cottonwood tree stands as a lone lookout

While a hungry grizzly bear wades in to pull a fish out

Sparkles of dancing light, reflecting by way of a bright sun

Providing opportunities for fishermen, casting for their fun

The vibration of splashes from a pair of wooden oars

Announces the arrival of a canoe, searching for more

A small island appears on the bend ahead—quiet and barren

There is always fascination with what nature will be wearing

Pushing ahead, an overloaded creek discharges its rampant load

The water’s own noises sometimes sound like a chorus of toads

Continuing to drive ahead toward the setting sun

The ageless river welcomes the end of its long run

Wooden: A Coach’s Life (Book Review)

IMG_20181130_110356588

John Wooden sustains a long and fulfilling life as his coaching career ascends to the top of his profession.  In Wooden:  A Coach’s Life, sportswriter and sportscaster Seth Davis captures captivating facts, takes the reader on a fascinating journey, and tells an amazing story about an icon of American college basketball.

Coach John Wooden guides his UCLA Bruins to the mountaintop of college basketball.  His journey to reach the heights of success do not come easy, and the book’s 525 pages, plus extensive notes and interviews, show how the skilled coach is always working diligently to master his craft.

Benefiting from exhaustive research, Davis presents an in-depth study of Coach Wooden’s life from his youth to the final year of his life.  Former players and assistant coaches provide personal anecdotes about UCLA’s legendary basketball coach, who leads the Bruins to 10 national championships in a 12-year span.

Davis’ engaging storytelling takes the reader from Wooden’s early days of growing up in the Hoosier State of Indiana to his high school team winning the state basketball championship in 1927.  The reader learns of the influence of Hugh Wooden on his young son’s early life.  All of these would be building blocks in propelling John Wooden to even greater accomplishments.

The love of Wooden’s high school years, Nell, would become his sweetheart and life-long companion.  Her unwavering support of her husband begins shortly after Wooden’s All-American basketball career finishes at Purdue.

Does the reader believe in fate?  As one consumes the pages of this book, fate shows up again and again in Wooden’s life.

John Wooden enlists in the Navy during World War II.  He leaves his teaching and coaching post at an Indiana high school, as well as his family, to serve his country.  However, he may not have returned back home alive except for an illness that keeps him off of a naval vessel that would later sink in the Pacific.

Later, Wooden contemplates where to continue his coaching career at the major college level.  In 1948, both Minnesota and UCLA are calling for his services.  Again, fate intervenes.

A storm interrupts the phone lines so that Wooden will never be the coach of the Minnesota team in the Midwest.  Instead, he commits to coaching UCLA on the West Coast while Minnesota waits for the lines to return to working order.  What if Minnesota had been able to contact Wooden first?  One can only imagine what basketball heights may have been scaled by the Golden Gophers in the Big Ten Conference.

There are many other examples of a hidden hand assisting Coach Wooden as he patiently builds his beloved Bruins into an unsurpassed juggernaut.  Wooden toils unselfishly for 15 years at UCLA before his Bruins defeat Duke for their first NCAA championship.

Davis interviews a Hall of Fame roster of former players at UCLA.  Gail Goodrich, Keith Erickson, Walt Hazzard, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jamal Wilkes, Bill Walton, and many more bring personal experiences to life as they describe playing for Coach Wooden.  Reading these testimonies from the star players, key role players, and even some who saw very little action, the reader learns much about the strengths and weaknesses of Wooden’s extraordinary years at the Westwood campus of the UCLA.

Seth Davis writes a comprehensive story about Wooden.  He shows an imperfect man facing challenges and pressures in the championship years, overcoming insecurities and mistakes along the way, and dealing with the untimely death of his beloved wife, Nell.  Wooden is at times a very shy man who craves to keep his personal life and family as private as possible.  His competitiveness to succeed and teaching basketball with sound fundamentals are hallmarks of his coaching style.

Published in 2014, Wooden:  A Coach’s Life  allows the reader to witness a former high school English teacher and basketball coach mastering his craft with the patience and meticulousness of an engineer.  Seth Davis moves the story forward with detailed descriptions of the many seasons in Coach Wooden’s career.  The reader sees a coach progressing forward despite numerous setbacks and disappointments until monumental triumphs bring him adoration as he becomes known as the “Wizard of Westwood” (a name that Wooden truly disliked).

Bumping the ball, again and again without error

Dreaming of becoming a great volleyball player

A young girl aspires to play volleyball with her all

Setting eyes on her future, she answers the call

Almost daily it seems, she practices again in the yard

Bumping a volleyball back up on the roof, isn’t so hard

This determined and skilled lady moves up in her years

Realizing always, playing volleyball brings her little fear

As she enters middle school, she plays on her first team

Enjoying the competition, making her face always beam

Bumping the ball, again and again without error

Dreaming of becoming a great volleyball player

Her soft hands and calmness, make her a skilled setter

Roaming the back row, her ball-hawking is even better

With a purpose, she enters high school and plays a key role

Setting up her teammates with accurate precision—Whoa!

Her teammates rally around her confident leadership

Wearing #9, her unruffled play leads and rarely slips

Her team charts a perfect season and a trip to State

Falling just a bit short, second place will be their fate

Bumping the ball, again and again without error

Dreaming of becoming a great volleyball player

The team moves forward with her unselfish play

Becoming a volleyball dynasty, even to this day

A relaxed, confident smile masks her intense competitiveness

Elevating her game, encouraging her team to lofty greatness

Now her team looks more determined, than ever before

Bringing its school and town, a perfect season of scores

Returning to State, the setter and her mates are up to the task

Capturing the school’s very first volleyball State crown, at last

Bumping the ball, again and again without error

Dreaming of becoming a great volleyball player

The Wildcats secure two more trips to State, to complete her career

Continuing a rich and winning volleyball tradition, without any tears

As her high school career begins its closing, thrilling year

Tasting defeat so very few times, makes opponents fear

“Wow, she hasn’t graduated yet!”—An opposing coach winks

Playing in these final State matches, her skills remain in sync

An incredible volleyball player, will no longer pass and roam

Remembering those times of practicing, in the yard at home

Bumping the ball, again and again without error

Dreaming of becoming a great volleyball player

Winter’s Opening Blast

2018 November 21 Moyer Sadie Turkey 009

Autumn needs to last for a few more weeks

But winter never arrives being far too meek

Overnight rain showers soak the Buckeye land

Then ice forms out of winter’s freezing hand

Winter’s icy arrival causes autumn to leave and bow out

The landscape cannot fight off winter’s mighty clout

Tree branches bend under the weight of the freezing rain

Shrouded in ice, cars will need scrapping—oh, what a pain!

Some schools cancel classes while others delay

Winter’s frozen grip will have the final say

Slowly the ice melts away, and the fall landscape returns

Only to see winter arrive once again, taking a left turn

Late evening snowflakes find their way to the ground

Now the grass lies hidden without making a sound

Winter has returned unexpectedly again this year

Let’s hope its snowy grip doesn’t bring too much fear

Just Not Fair

General Motors announces massive job cuts today

Leaving thousands of workers with nothing to say

The announcement surprisingly comes at a bad time

Dimming the lights on a Christmas will not be fine

Factories will close in Maryland, Ohio, and Michigan

Creating turmoil, hardship, and anguish all over again

Corporate leaders plan to take GM on an uncertain road

Failing to sympathize with workers left out in the cold

Layoffs take a tremendous toll on America’s families

Struggling to survive awful and humbling calamities

No longer welcome to arrive for another work shift

Standing outside a closed gate with lives going adrift

People say that the sun will always come up the next day

Looking skyward, displaced workers will only see gray

What does the future hold for the American land?

Praying to God and asking for His helping hands

The Big Game

Ohio State football fans come dressed in Scarlet and Gray

Hoping their beloved Buckeyes will be victorious this day

Michigan fans arrive ready to go in their Maize and Blue

Following their Wolverines with an intense spirit so true

The Big Game has arrived on a cloudy, damp afternoon

Realizing that the winning team will play again very soon

The Big Ten Championship (oh yes!) is once again on the line

Cheering fans from both sides will watch for another time

The game is televised across the nation for all to see

Playing in historic Ohio Stadium—no calmness will be

Both teams are ranked in the top ten across the land

Packing the Horseshoe with Scarlet and Gray is the plan

Coach Meyer and Coach Harbaugh have their teams ready

Remembering legends Woody and Bo will keep them steady

Ohio State scores first with an impeccable scoring drive

Keeping the Buckeyes fans fired up and very much alive

Michigan settles for a pair of field goals as its offense stalls

Bending, but not breaking—the Buckeyes defense stands tall

Early mistakes and penalties plague each team

Trying hard, but not yet settled down it seems

The Scarlet and Gray rally to score twice again through the air

Feeling momentum building, these touchdowns make a great pair

The Maize and Blue respond with a touchdown of their own

Quieting the Buckeyes fans, but no one feels ready to go home

The kick-off is recovered by Michigan—“Shocking, it can’t be!”

Sputtering Buckeyes fans watch in horror, not wanting to see

The game score stands close at 24-19 at halftime

Calling all fans to witness this amazing battle so fine

The Buckeyes offensive line performs its job flawlessly

Allowing quarterback Haskins the time to pass endlessly

The ancient Horseshoe gathers up its ghosts from the past

Finding for the Buckeyes, big plays that will create a blast

The Scarlet and Gray erupts with a climatic, thunderous roar

Watching a blocked punt lead to another Buckeyes score

The overflowing stadium rocks with all of the stops pulled out

Intercepting a Wolverines pass brings another gigantic shout

The Buckeyes have taken over the game for sure

Maintaining their advantage for a victory so pure

Ohio State’s high-octane offense has answered the call

Making Michigan’s top-ranked defense stumble and fall

As the Scarlet and Gray celebrates another awesome game

Flashing from the scoreboard, a score of 62-39 will be framed!

The Big Game finally ends in Ohio State’s favor

Counting seven wins in a row is something to savor

Go Bucks!  You handled that team up North once again!

Thanksgiving Memories

Remembering annual family gatherings from years past

Enjoying special, blessed times which will last and last

Filling Grandma’s packed house with people from near and far

Seeing aunts, uncles, and cousins—as numerous as the stars

Feeling the crisp, autumn air—possibly snow on the ground

Arriving with abundant food and family love to pass around

Pitching in, many helping hands prepare the meal

Eating together on Thanksgiving is a very big deal

Catching up on life from several corners of the state

Thanking the Lord that all arrived safely on this date

Listening to exciting conversation that fills the tiny house

Disappearing from a kitchen corner, a frightened mouse!

Preparing so many favorite and delicious treats

Tasting each will make today an awesome feast

Setting up Grandma’s sizable dining room table with care

Deciding where each family member will sit, here or there

Providing for extra places to eat in the living room

Anticipating that all of us will be eating very soon

Smelling the huge turkey roasting in the oven until finally done

Carving this bird and splitting the wishbone, most delicious fun

Pleasing everyone’s taste buds, with a gathering of yummy dishes

Adding stuffing, mashed potatoes, and yams to everyone’s wishes

Saving room for a sweet symphony of delicious pies

Savoring a slice of pumpkin or many others—Oh my!

Exchanging stories, playing cards, and watching football

Realizing too soon that the time says, “Goodnight to all”

Departing for home, before everyone’s bedtime arrives

Blessing our family time, this thanksgiving feels so alive

Smiling from her large window, Grandma feels so much love

Looking forward to experiencing peace, from the Lord above
