Beware of November

Calendar page turns to November

Autumn season filling with its peace

Colorful leaves have fallen away

Winds of winter begin to release

Temperatures cascading downward

Barren trees swaying and shivering

Farm fields ready for hibernation

Autumn’s harmony now quivering

Many say, beware of November

Her fading hues begin looking north

Arctic’s snowy cold now encroaching

Winter’s early surprise coming forth

Ranchers scurry to shelter cattle

Yards cheerfully display fall’s decor

Boldly hanging on to each strawman

Nothing postpones winter’s early chore

Harsh winds of November come and go

Sometimes with cold feints, or so much more

Chilling rain turns to ice, never nice

Winter’s snow, knocking at autumn’s door

During my first year of teaching at Plevna Schools, found in southeastern Montana, I was greeted with a winter that I will always remember.  The first snowflakes and cold began arriving in early November, and they didn’t stop until late February.  Finally the chinook winds began to warm up the countryside, and ranchers and farmers were rejoicing.  After all, the winter one year earlier had included the famous blizzard of 1978.

Seasons Eternal

Mankind hurtles toward unknown

Nature’s seasons relay what’s known

Autumn prepares for transition

Holding off winter’s ambition

Both man and nature look ahead

Unearthing their most common thread

At times, life needs relaxing pause

Forsaking bright lights and applause

Terrain changes to snowy scene

Covering life white, without green

Man growls at cold, numbing weather

Spotting fireplace, warm together

Winter’s snowfall hiding its gems

Waiting for newest, greenest stems

Spring awakens frozen landscape

Encouraging life’s next escape

Man and nature again feel free

Twinkling eyes find each budding tree

Creator’s Spirit, love transcends

Seasons eternal, never end

Winter’s Playfulness

Quiet autumn afternoon croons

Turning crystal white much too soon

Tree’s colorful, festive heart breaks

Collecting endless white snowflakes

Guarded weather forecast tonight

Predicting quickest shot of white

Overnight, all signals splinter

Transforming autumn into winter

Morning arrives, sharing delight

Witnessing a land, white and bright

Massive neighborhood tree now frowns

Missing some branches, crashing down

Silence broken, machines at play

Blowing heavy, wet snow away

Others working as busy bees

Shoveling sidewalk paths, now free

Laughter punctuates winter’s air

Watching children, playing in pairs

City avenues filling with cars

Sliding and crashing, near and far

Winter’s sense of humor snowballs

Spoiling autumn’s last curtain call

But wait, a few days down the road

Coming back, fall’s last episode

Days numbered, autumn’s final turn

Waiting for winter’s cold return

Cleansing Rain

Photo by VisionPic .net on Pexels.com

Autumn rains lasting for days

Covering the land with mist

Cleansing under cloudy haze

Rising pollen, now dismissed

Harvest pausing, farmers wait

Parking soybeans, left to take

Drying cornstalks, know their fate

Standing ready, combines brake

Creeks filling, slowly at first

Running water, sent ahead

Suspending reservoirs’ thirst

Pausing for now, winter’s dread

Nature’s perfect cycle breathes

Singing praises to the Lord

Watching as autumn unsheathes

Waking when spring comes aboard

Back in Time

Walking along the ancient canal towpath fills my mind with thoughts of years ago . . .

Early morning walk, going back in time

Autumn’s breath creates thoughts, filling with rhyme

Trekking along canal’s ancient pathway

Thoughts caress past moments, plenty to say

Gentle breeze, sending leaves twirling on down

Mind arrives at different time and town

Dreaming . . .

More simple times, without high tech living

Days invite, delightful and forgiving

Riding bareback along this old canal

Looking for trees to climb with school-age pals

Fishing one final time, nearby pond waits

When icy winter comes, change to ice skates

Creepy, storm-filled nights, reading classic prose

Edgar Allen Poe’s words, scary shadows

Looking for literature’s lighter themes

Whitman, Hawthorne, Melville adding to dreams

Quiet evenings filled with family time

Gathered around for radio’s primetime

Crisp, fall afternoon, gridiron titans clash

College football rivals looking to smash

Romance blossoms, courtship takes center stage

Life filling with sweetness, each turning page

Back to reality . . .

Journey runs into closed gate at Rager Road

Turning around, grateful for time borrowed

Looking forward to walking here real soon

Fondest memories, let them sing a tune

A quiet place for fishing, conversation, and winter ice skating.
