Oswald Chambers Quote

Remember what you are saved for–that the Son of God might be manifested in your mortal flesh.

From Ephesians 1:18:  “So that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may perceive what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance among the saints.”

Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) was a Scottish evangelist and Christian teacher.  Following his death from an illness while in Egypt during World War I, his wife took on the task of transcribing the detailed notes she had written from his lectures and sermons.  Gertrude Hobbs Chambers’ efforts resulted in the publication in 1924 of MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST.  I frequently read from this devotional, and it has greatly deepened my faith and understanding of God’s Word.

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

Let us then be up and doing, with a heart for any fate; still achieving, still pursuing, learn to labor and to wait.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was an American poet and educator.  Born in Portland, Maine, he has long been remembered for being one of New England’s fireside poets.

A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject all.

From Romans 14:11-12:  “For it is written, ‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall give praise to God.’  So then, each one of us will be held accountable.”

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American naturalist, poet, and philosopher.  Influenced by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne, many of his writings reflected upon living in natural surroundings.

They lose nothing who gain Christ.

Samuel Rutherford (1600-1661) was a Scottish pastor and Christian theologian.

Sometimes God calms the storm.  Sometimes He lets the storm rage and He calms you.

From Proverbs 10:24-25:  “What the wicked dread will come upon them, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.  When the tempest passes, the wicked are no more, but the righteous are established forever.”

The ballot box is the surest arbiter of disputes among free men.

Whatever the result may be, I shall carry to my grave the consciousness that I at least meant well for my country.

James Buchanan (1791-1868) was the 15th President of the United States.  His single term in office was unable to stem the tides of America’s approaching civil war.

Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.

From 1 Peter 1:8-9:  “Although you have not seen Him, you love Him, and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
