Selwyn Hughes Quote

Those who accept Scripture’s teaching concerning God must be prepared to say that He is not only personal, but that He is a plurality of Persons–a Trinity.

From Matthew3:16-17:  “And when Jesus had been baptized, just as He came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to Him and He saw God’s Spirit descending like a dove and alighting on Him.  And a voice from the heavens said, ‘This is My Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.'”

Selwyn Hughes (1928-2006) was a Welsh-born Christian minister and author.  One of his best known works was the daily devotional EVERY DAY WITH JESUS.

God’s Tripod

From 2 Corinthians 13:13:  “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.”

Searching for God’s Kingdom

Life held back, born of flesh

Restrained by sinful chains

Spirit comes to refresh

Earthbound, God’s grace arrives

Breathing as Son of Man

Eternity opens

Laying out divine plan

Being born from above

God’s Word descends with Light

Son’s faith, unselfish love

Spirit’s mercy takes flight

Believing in Savior

Accepting grace of God

Spirit’s destiny breathes

Trinity, God’s tripod

From Matthew 28:19-20:  “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.  And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Grace Leading

From Matthew 5:13-14:  “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored?  It is no longer good for anything but is thrown out and trampled under foot.  You are the light of the world.  A city built on a hill cannot be hid.”

From 2 Corinthians 3:18:  “And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.”

Trust and Obey

From Matthew 28:19-20:  “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.  And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Forgettable years adding up

Spiritual health needs checkup

Winter’s never-ending season

Now asking, “What is life’s reason?”

Empty heart filling with sorrow

God not waiting for tomorrow

Lost on dusty shelf, answer speaks

Holy Bible verses now seek

God’s guiding hands open each page

Grace unlocking life’s gloomy cage

Gospels speak of Messiah’s love

Son journeys to earth from above

Jesus speaks truth with conviction

Mercy’s faith heals each affliction

Son of God tells of one to come

Spirit beating hope’s steady drum

Lord’s Advocate, incessant voice

Each day fills with His divine choice

Trust and obey our Triune God

Righteousness shatters sin’s facade

Unforgettable years beaming

Spiritual health now gleaming

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Grace and peace filling life’s spirit

God, Creator, Holy Father

Gathering heavens, earth, and sea

Blessing east to west, north to south

His goodness shall never leave thee

Jesus Christ, Savior, Son of God

Commands and conquers stormy seas

Quiets endless wind into peace

Saving us from life’s gloomy breeze

Holy Spirit, Son’s Advocate

Wondrous works across land and sea

Turns desert to Living Water

Blessing days, Spirit true and free

Eternal Father, Three in One

Trinity’s mercy from above

Sing of Holy deeds, songs of joy

God’s Glory reigning with His love

English writer and hymnist, William Whiting wrote the lyrics to the hymn, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save.”  Used in a recent devotional, this hymn inspired the crafting of this poem.  Written in 1860, this hymn is also known as “The Navy Hymn.”

Without Faith

From Hebrews 11:6:  “And without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would approach Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.”

Photo by Jens Johnsson on Pexels.com

Living without faith

Never pleasing to God

Scripture grows musty

Seeing life as a fraud

Lacking true knowledge

Missing God’s living Word

Whole heart feels empty

Running with the wrong herd

Callous attitude

Faith absent, lonesome walk

Mind unbelieving

AWOL from Shepherd’s flock

Holy Trinity

Faith’s long forgotten light

Father, Son, Spirit

Blessed angels take flight
