About bigskybuckeye

Born in the Big Sky Country of Montana and now living in the Buckeye State of Ohio, Richard is the creative mind behind Big Sky Buckeye. Retired after 40 years of teaching, I enjoy writing, photography, traveling, and following a healthy lifestyle.

Visions of Love (Tanka Series #1)

A Tanka is a Japanese form of poetry, which is related to its cousin Haiku.  The poem uses 31 syllables covering five lines (with syllable counts following a 7, 5, 5, 7 and 7 sequence).  An effective Tanka uses personification, metaphors, and similes in its construction, and it performs well in expressing a mood, a thought, or a feeling.

Love fills the cosmos

Dancing among twinkling stars

Destined to shout out

Galaxies singing with joy

Witnessing marital bliss

Smiling with each encounter

Spanning countless miles

Igniting one connection

Nurturing with every kiss

Love struggles at times

Clawing for ways out

Traversing each mountaintop

Shouting with joy, a new start

Behind the Scenes–Act 2

Welcome to “Behind the Scenes.”  Today, we are visiting with Richard, the creative energy behind the writing journey of Big Sky Buckeye.

Welcome back Richard.  It is a pleasure visit with you again.

You have been writing and blogging for about 19 months.  Why did you start writing and sharing here on WordPress?

Following my retirement from teaching, I was looking for an outlet for my energy and time in the fall of 2018.  With some encouragement from others, I took the plunge with a goal of writing poetry.  My first poem was “Early Morning Moments.”

Watching the flame dance in early dawn

Feeling the warmth of a new born fawn

Warmed by an early morning, blazing fire

Viewing a hungry deer jumping over a wire

Enjoying a comforting warmth from the fireplace

Seeing a startled pair running to a new place

Dreaming of a day to stay inside by the flames

Looking out of a window to see deer playing games

You are quite creative with your writing.  In the past, have you pursued any musical interests?

My first taste of formal music was with instrumental music, beginning in the fifth grade as I played clarinet.  I continued to play through the ninth grade until more and more of my time went into athletics in high school.  I haven’t really played since the late 1970s, and the clarinet has been passed down to two of my daughters.

Several years ago when I was teaching in Montana, I sang in the church choir.  This was a wonderful experience in sharing with the congregation our appreciation of singing some favorite hymns.

Before we wrap-up, please tell us of some your interests outside of writing.

I enjoy traveling, and my wife and I have enjoyed two highway trips during the past couple of summers when we meandered and found our way back to Montana to see family.  Without a need to return home on a tight schedule, we enjoyed taking the scenic route through different states, towns, and attractions.

As some readers have found, I enjoy sharing my love of nature photography in my blog’s Photo Gallery.  While I don’t profess to be an excellent photographer, I have found the time well spent in taking photos while traveling or even walking through a nature park near my home.

We have appreciated spending time with Richard from Big Sky Buckeye.  Look for more “Behind the Scenes” in future postings.

Victor Hugo Quote

Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace.  God is awake.

From Isaiah 43:18-19:  “Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old.  I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?  I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

Serenity’s Rain

Witnessing an early morning rain inspires the visions for this poem.  It is amazing how a view through an open window can bring forth images to write from.

Replenishing parched, barren land

Serenity’s rain, from God’s hand

Quenching desert’s eternal thirst

Nature smiling, joy now disbursed

Nourishing life with loving pride

Flora and fauna, at God’s side

Touching each leaf, stems from God’s love

Hues of green, colored from above

Singing with praise, birds bless this scene

Creation glowing, dazzling sheen

Sharing splendor, feeling at peace

Morning rain, grants life a new lease

Listening closely, hearing now

W. Phillip Keller Quote

We are identified and known by the sort of fruit, the quantity of fruit, and the quality of fruit borne out in our daily conversation, conduct, and character.

From Galatians 5:22-25:  “By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  There is no law against such things.  And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.  If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.

Monday Memories: A Whisper

Hearing a far, distant whisper

Delicately spoken

Soothing words

Speaking in a special voice

Familiar sounding

Decades ago

Whispering over and over again

Barely audible

Peacefully said

Taking one on a journey

Distant city

Tranquil feeling

Listening for the whisper again

Silence now

Returning when?

Beholding a New Day

Our Heavenly Father, we rejoice and humbly receive your precious gift of a new day.  Our hopes burn brighter as we give thanks for your blessing of this gift.  Amen.

Emerging each morning, a new dawn

Waiting outside our door, neatly wrapped

Walking next to us, God understands

Bringing us love, never feeling trapped

Designing His gift, a new day calls

Witnessing God’s deeds, each day unfolds

Allowing us, to live out each day

Feeling His Grace, hearts never grow old

Guarding us during times of trouble

Opening gates each day, His stronghold

Trusting in God, never forsaken

Singing His praises, humble yet bold

Kneeling and praying, as this day ends

Rejoicing, in all our Father sends
