Monday Memories: If I Was a . . .

This poem is inspired by a song which has been sung by many artists.  Bobby Darin and later Johnny Cash and June Carter recorded their versions of “If I Were a Carpenter.”   The song was written by Tim Hardin, and other artists have recorded and performed the song as well.  Here is Bobby Darin’s version:  “If I Were a Carpenter.”

If I was a teacher

Bringing energy, passion, and patience

Showcasing learning as school’s top feature

If I was a firefighter

Serving with unselfish duty and pride

Protecting all, making worries lighter

If I was an architect

Designing buildings for many uses

Looking ahead to challenging projects

If I was a farmer

Rising at dawn, working until sundown

Bringing a nation food, as God’s armor

If I was a nurse

Sharing with patient, compassionate care

Filling lives with hope, never for the worse

If I was a writer

Crafting words into stories and much more

Witnessing through eyes, open and brighter

If I was a musician

Creating good vibes through words and music

Entertaining songs’ perfect rendition

If I was a preacher

Instilling God’s Word within a church’s flock

Encouraged to be one of God’s teachers

If I was a soldier

Preserving peace and freedom in the world

Band of brothers, stand shoulder to shoulder

If I was a young tyke

Looking up to these inspiring adults

Growing up, each day feeling more alike

I believe age should not stop you from keeping on.

Better to be busy than to be busy worrying.

Angela Lansbury (1925-2022) was an Irish-British and American actress.  She pursued work in the theater, film, and television.  She was well-known for her highly successful American television series, “Murder She Wrote.”

Mercy Conquers

From Psalm 69:14:  “Rescue me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters.”

Watching man’s plight

God takes human form

Breathing Scripture’s cues

Mercy conquers storm

Stumbling in faith

God sees lack of trust

Sending His own Son

Evil becomes dust

Breaking sin’s chains

Calvary’s blood flows

Kneeling in prayer

Light enters shadows

Walking through fire

Grace making descent

Pulsing with courage

God always present

Witnessing cross

Spirit opens eyes

Accepting Jesus

God, more than life-size

When we connect Scripture to our everyday lives, our faith grows from the Lord’s everlasting goodness.

Selwyn Hughes Quote

Those who accept Scripture’s teaching concerning God must be prepared to say that He is not only personal, but that He is a plurality of Persons–a Trinity.

From Matthew3:16-17:  “And when Jesus had been baptized, just as He came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to Him and He saw God’s Spirit descending like a dove and alighting on Him.  And a voice from the heavens said, ‘This is My Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.'”

Selwyn Hughes (1928-2006) was a Welsh-born Christian minister and author.  One of his best known works was the daily devotional EVERY DAY WITH JESUS.

Springtime Blues

Photo by Misael Silvera on Pexels.com

Ceaseless, overnight rain

Early morn’s swollen creek

Flowing outside its bank

Nature ready to tweak

Smaller tributaries

Never to be left out

Gathering their volume

Flood’s growing runabout

Cloud’s river of moisture

Lengthy, not finished yet

Forecasting gloomy skies

Weather’s headlines typeset

Sun planning its comeback

But not for day or two

Waiting with humble song

Nature croons springtime blues

Brain Teaser Question

What is the longest word in the dictionary?

(answer found at the end of this post)

Featured Facts

The American prairie dog frequently makes sounds like a dog barking, but they are not a member of the dog family.  They are related to a ground squirrels, chipmunks, groundhogs, and woodchucks.

Here are some interesting facts about the prairie dog:

  • Habitat:  Prairie lands from Montana and the Dakotas to Texas)
  • Body length:  11-14 inches (28-36 cm)
  • Weight:  2-4 pounds
  • Diet:  Grasses and crops

Prairie dogs live as a group (coterie).  Each coterie is socially active and contains up to 10-20 members.  They construct an extensive system of underground burrows called a town.  This subsurface network connects a series of tunnels with chambers.  Several coteries may inhabit the same town.

If one ever observes a prairie dog town, he will find that one or two prairie dogs stand as lookouts.  Their heads can be seen above the entrance to the tunnel, and they communicate through chattering, which are high-pitched squeaks and barking.
