When the world tells you to shrink . . . expand.

Another school day, found in learning’s shrine
Thoughts seeking adventure’s breath of escape
Youth deserves to fill tomorrow’s headlines
Endless visions gathered, flight plan takes shape
Looking up into heavens’ blackened sky
Seeking to travel amongst brightest stars
Dreaming of final frontier, flying high
Searching incessant mysteries afar
Piloting starship of latest design
Fascinating discoveries in view
Transforming as universe redefines
Unlocking galaxy’s intimate clues
Departing from mankind’s earthly cocoon
Reading Jules Verne’s “From the Earth to the Moon”

This poem has been crafted as a sonnet: Note the four stanzas filled out with 14 lines, each line contains a total of 10 syllables, and the consistent rhyming pattern connects every other line in each stanza. It is doubtful that William Shakespeare ever considered designing a sonnet around this theme. Renowned French writer Jules Verne published one of literature’s earliest science-fiction novels, From the Earth to the Moon, in 1865.

Destiny plans a different route and fulfills the dream in ways we couldn’t have expected.
Creativity is the art of the impossible.

Let your dreams be bigger than your fears, your actions louder than your words, and your faith stronger than your feelings.
From Matthew 19:24-26: “‘Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’ When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, ‘Then who can be saved?’ But Jesus looked at them and said, ‘For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.'”

Autumn’s fading peace
Winter’s renewing lease
One lonely snowflake
More coming at daybreak
Sky fills with more snow
Sunshine, morning’s no-show
Snow’s depth keeps growing
Wind wakes up, now blowing
Light powder sifting
Definitely drifting
Traffic hurries home
Under low-pressure dome
Drivers surrender
With each fender bender
Life’s pace slowing down
Snowstorm parks, all around
Forecast calls for more
Snowplows called out to war
Surfing waves of white
Under wintry twilight
Empty classrooms sleep
Children shall never weep
Nighttime dreams complete
Will tomorrow repeat?

If you stop to be kind, you must swerve often from your path.
Saddle your dreams before you ride them.
Mary Webb (1881-1927) was an English romance novelist and poet.

Nestling with Christmas warmth
Dreaming of winter’s snow
Gliding down peaceful slopes
Beside lofty chateau
Sleeping with cherished peace
Hearing each silver bell
Waiting expectations
Mystery’s carousel
Ringing red kettle’s bell
Giving from grateful heart
Letting go of some cash
Someone’s life will restart
Quickening steps now stop
Finding one final gift
Sharing love with others
Purchase completes this shift
Gazing into night’s sky
Drifting, tiny snowflake
Inviting even more
Ground swells from snowy quake
Blessing midnight’s entrance
Painting whitest landscape
Witnessing lighted tree
Christmas dreams taking shape

The Christmas season can mean different things to many people, but residing in its heart just might be these words as written by American Congressman William Carey Jones (1855-1927): “The joy of brightening other lives, bearing each other’s burdens, easing others’ loads and supplanting empty hearts and lives with generous gifts becomes for us the magic of Christmas.”

Sleeping beneath midnight stars
Dreaming of faraway lands
Tracing desktop’s spinning globe
Traveling with comfort’s hands
Searching for bold adventures
Filling imagination
Revolving world comes to rest
Discovering location
Boarding fastest clipper ship
Setting sail, freedom ahead
Lighting up destiny’s route
Leaving comfortable bed
Traversing treacherous seas
Sailing toward setting sun
Scanning distant horizon
Anticipating more fun
Pulsating alarm intrudes
Crashing through innocent dreams
Waking for Monday’s school day
Leaving journey in midstream

Walking along distant shore
Splashing through love rolling in
Filling anticipation
For what might have been
Chasing footprints, still present
Wishing love would return back home
Filling eternal sunset
For dreams want to roam
Clinging to memory’s thoughts
Sorting images, clear and bright
Filling love’s gentle presence
For each morn beams light
Recalling tiny details
Bringing smiles inside lonely heart
Filling tender, childlike love
For music restarts
Longing for more sandy walks
Holding hands, together as one
Filling timeless connections
For love’s never done
