Heartache Cries Out

Overwhelming
Shadows of war
Destiny speaks
Coming ashore

Future’s darkness
All light erased
Freedom removed
Feeling misplaced

Opposition
All dissent crushed
Outlook grows dim
Speaking now hushed

Heartache cries out
Resistance fades
Hope extinguished
Hiding afraid

Tomorrow’s breath
Empty of pulse
War carries on
Grinding impulse

Writer’s Note: I’ve been watching the History Channel’s documentary on World War II, hosted by Tom Hanks. The images seen inspired the writing of this poem.

In the midst of the struggles and the storms and the sufferings of life, we can advance our thoughts beyond today and see relief.  Because, in the end, God does indeed win.

From Romans 12:12:  “Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; persevere in prayer.”

Charles Swindoll (born 1934) is an American pastor and Christian author.

Hardship forces us to grab hands with one another and pull up closer together.

From Philippians 2:17-18:  “But even if I am being poured out as a libation over the sacrifice and the service of your faith, I rejoice, and I rejoice together with all of you; in the same way also you should rejoice and rejoice together with me.”

Hardships make or break people.

Burdens are for shoulders strong enough to carry them.

(Both quotes come from Mitchell’s novel, Gone with the Wind)

Margaret Mitchell (1900-1949) was an American novelist and journalist.  Her only published novel earned the National Book Award for Fiction in 1936 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937.
