America’s Election Night

Voting has finally finished for another election

Americans have once again made their selections

As the election results begin to trickle in

People grow anxious to learn who will win

The past weeks have bombarded the airwaves with ads

Some of their messages are so negative and very sad

Our President arouses emotions when he expresses views

It is a sham and a shame to blame Fake News

Democrat or Republican, both sides take blame

At times our world never seems to be the same

Many look back at the past and ask to return

But so much has changed and taken a wrong turn

Any nation is only great when its entire population

Unifies and comes together in ways that bring adoration

Falling asleep in my chair with the television still on

I awaken to see a nation coming together as one

America is the home of the brave and the land of the free

Let us all make our country as proud as it should be

This poem is more of an opinion piece.  While I am sometimes frustrated and disappointed in America, I still carry high hopes for this nation to repair its dysfunctions and act as one!  Every citizen needs to get out and vote in every election.  Each vote is important to preserving democracy in the land of the free.  Our Founding Fathers built and designed this nation to last and stay strong.  Perhaps we need to capture some of their patriotic and unselfish spirit before we go on.

Scary Halloween Night

Halloween Scenes 2018 October 001

The midnight moon arrives low in the sky

Another wicked witch stands ready to fly

Rising from his barren, freezing coffin this night

Dracula seeks a bloody treat before dawn’s light

All of the spirits, zombies, goblins, and others

Arrive for a Halloween dance like none other

The trick or treaters have long since been in bed

With their high blood sugar rushing to their heads

Howling under the dark, scary night—preparing to slay

The ferocious werewolf, inclined to frighten and prey

How are you sleeping on this dreadfully dark night?

While the darkness brings horror and much fright!

Visit the Medora Musical

Western North Dakota hosts one of the finest outdoor sites designed for summer fun for the entire family.  The Medora Musical has been a tradition since 1965, and it will be preparing to open up another summer season of fast-paced dancing, singing, and comedy.

The town of Medora hosts this annual rite of summer.  Medora and its approximately 132 inhabitants are located right along Interstate 94 in the middle of the North Dakota Badlands.

The musical runs nightly from June 1 through the first week of September.  The show’s venue is the Burning Hills Amphitheater, which is a short, easy drive just outside of Medora.  Shows start promptly at 7:30 p.m. and end around 10:00 p.m.  The outdoor amphitheater is modern and easily accessible by senior citizens, small children, and anyone needing some extra assistance.

Built around a musical theme, the family-friendly Medora Musical features the Burning Hills Singers, who entertain with their exceptional singing and energized dancing.  Featuring a patriotic finale each night, the show is dedicated to America’s 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt.  Additional entertainment is featured each night from a variety of acts from around the country.

Visiting the Medora Musical offers much more than just experiencing the top-notch music and entertainment.  Experience the Old West by walking in the steps of Theodore Roosevelt, who spent some of his life in the Badlands during the 1880s.  Located next door to Medora, Theodore Roosevelt National Park offers visitors an opportunity to see the Badlands and all of its natural beauty.  Various lodging accommodations and unique restaurants and gift shops wait for all who arrive in Medora.

Any visitor to Medora should set aside time to check out the local attractions and events.  A delicious Pitchfork Steak Fondue is prepared near the amphitheater prior to each night’s show.  The Old Town Hall Theater hosts daytime shows, and the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame is found just down the street.  For the more adventurous, horseback riding is nearby, and the Bully Pulpit Golf Course stands ready to challenge even the most-seasoned golfer.

Theodore Roosevelt fell in love with the Badlands, and the experience changed his life.  He summed up his time around Medora, “I never would have been President if it had not been for my experiences in North Dakota.”

Medora is a small place with first-class entertainment that can fill anyone’s appetite, and the time spent will definitely bring one back again and again.

Shocking Secrets of American History (Book Review)

IMG_20181026_113830080

Educator and historian, Bill Coate, presents surprising and sometimes funny short stories about American history.  In writing Shocking Secrets of American History, he unlocks precious gems as he brings history to the reader in a simple, fascinating way.

Published in 2006, the organization of the book is easy to follow.  There are 115 brilliantly written short accounts that are each two pages in length.  Each selection stands on its own so the reader can put the book down and easily pick it back up for the next topic.

The selections begin with American patriot John Adams’ defense of the British redcoats following the Boston Massacre in 1770.  The final story presents the heroic exploits and leadership on Utah Beach during the Normandy invasion on D-Day (June 6, 1944), as General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. leads his men into battle.

The book is organized into five sections:  Early America, the Civil War, the White House, the West, and the Twentieth Century.  As Coate writes, he reminds one of listening to radio broadcaster, Paul Harvey, with his “The Rest of the Story.”  The reader has an opportunity to enjoy humorous, amazing little-known tidbits of American history.  Each story is short, but loaded with in-depth knowledge and facts, written in a lively and exciting manner.

Bill Coate is a past Disney Teacher of the Year, and he continues to write about history from his home in Madera, California.

Tasty Chocolate Bar

Waking up too early, in quite a wretched fickle

Checking my coins, cannot even find a nickel

Spending my last bit of change last night

For a delicious Hershey bar, my delight

Taking a long, relaxing walk in the woods

Then finding myself farther than I should

Stopping to snack on a sweet Hershey bar

I realize that my journey has gone too far

Suddenly from behind a cluster of pine trees

Comes something much, much bigger than me

A hungry black bear scampers towards me

I flee the scene at a harried pace, you see

The famished bear welcomes a tasty, sweet treat

For my yummy chocolate bar has fallen at his feet

Television’s Precious Gifts

Television brings us plenty to enjoy and view

There is so much to check out—both old and new

For some, 24-hour news channels keep them up-to-date

On whatever will be the day’s events and our fate

Growing up and watching many children’s shows

Most of them teach what there is to know

Movies, movies, movies of every genre and taste

Some make people finish dinner in a big haste

For those wanting to laugh, there are funny sitcoms

Some may even remind one of his dad or mom

Viewing dramas fills others’ interests and time

Certain shows will become daily favorites of mine

Now even more choices are available for all of us

The Internet offers even more shows without the fuss

Early Morning Moments

Watching the flame dance in early dawn

Feeling the warmth of a new born fawn

Warmed by an early morning, blazing fire

Viewing a hungry deer jumping over a wire

Enjoying a comforting warmth from the fireplace

Seeing a startled pair running to a new place

Dreaming of a day to stay inside by the flames

Looking out of a window to see deer playing games

Visit “Field of Dreams” film location

In 1989, Kevin Costner starred in “Field of Dreams” along with a cast that includes Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta, and Burt Lancaster (in his final film role).

Much of the Oscar-nominated Best Picture was filmed in Iowa on a farm near Dyersville.  The film site is still there today (including the famous ball field and corn field along with the family home).

The public can visit the site (free of charge), but the best time to go is in mid-July through late August when the corn field is more mature and tall in height.  The field is located just northeast of Dyersville on a paved road

Morning Coffee

Smelling the rich aroma on another early morn

Anticipating the initial taste, like being reborn

Certainly one cup will not be enough today

A second cup causes worries to fade away

As Dolly Parton sings, “Pour myself a cup of ambition”

Coffee will definitely be my regular morning addiction

Waking up on a chilly, frosty, dark day

Jumping out of bed to be on one’s way

Hurrying down to the kitchen, what is this?

No coffee!  An empty cup offers no bliss!
