During my days of deepest grief, in all of my shock, sorrow, and struggle, I sat at the feet of God.  I literally spent hours each day reading God’s Word, meditating on Scripture, and praying.  I intentionally spent a significant amount of time being still before God.

From Psalm 23:1-4:  “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.  He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters; He restores my soul.  He leads me in right paths for His name’s sake.  Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff–they comfort me.”

I love the melodies in the Old Testament, how preachers highlight them when they read from the Scripture.  But I was influenced forever by the New Testament.  I love the Beatitudes, informing us that the meek shall inherit the earth.

From Matthew 5:1-12:  “When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.  Then He began to speak, and taught them, saying:”

  • Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
  • Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
  • Blessed for those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
  • Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
  • Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
  • Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
  • Blessed are those who are persecuted  for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on My account.
  • Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The Rock of Ages is the great sheltering encirclement.

From 2 Samuel 22:2-3:  “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield and the horn of my salvation; my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.

Faith in God will not get for you everything you want, but it will get for you what God wants you to have.  The unbeliever does not need what he wants; the Christian should want only what he needs.

From Proverbs 16:9:  “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

Hope is a wonderful gift from God, a source of strength and courage in the face of life’s harshest trails.

From Psalm 73:25:  “Whom have I in heaven but You?  And there is nothing on earth that I desire other than You.”

Life is a glorious opportunity.

From Colossians 4:2-5:  “Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving.  At the same time pray for us as well that God will open to us a door to the word, that we may declare the mystery of Christ, for which I am in prison, so that I may reveal it clearly, as I should.  Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time.”

What makes a Christian a Christian is not perfection but forgiveness.

From Matthew 18:21-22:  “Then Peter came and said to Him, ‘Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive?  As many as seven times?’  Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but I tell you, seventy times seven.'”

“If the Lord will” is not just a statement on a believer’s lips; it is the constant attitude of his heart.

From Psalm 43-10:  “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God.  Let your good spirit lead me on a level path.”

The fruit of the Spirit is self-control.  Self-control frees us from slavery.  Self-control stops bad habits.  It checks us.  It halts us.

From Galatians 5:25:  “If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.”
