Bumping the ball, again and again without error

Dreaming of becoming a great volleyball player

A young girl aspires to play volleyball with her all

Setting eyes on her future, she answers the call

Almost daily it seems, she practices again in the yard

Bumping a volleyball back up on the roof, isn’t so hard

This determined and skilled lady moves up in her years

Realizing always, playing volleyball brings her little fear

As she enters middle school, she plays on her first team

Enjoying the competition, making her face always beam

Bumping the ball, again and again without error

Dreaming of becoming a great volleyball player

Her soft hands and calmness, make her a skilled setter

Roaming the back row, her ball-hawking is even better

With a purpose, she enters high school and plays a key role

Setting up her teammates with accurate precision—Whoa!

Her teammates rally around her confident leadership

Wearing #9, her unruffled play leads and rarely slips

Her team charts a perfect season and a trip to State

Falling just a bit short, second place will be their fate

Bumping the ball, again and again without error

Dreaming of becoming a great volleyball player

The team moves forward with her unselfish play

Becoming a volleyball dynasty, even to this day

A relaxed, confident smile masks her intense competitiveness

Elevating her game, encouraging her team to lofty greatness

Now her team looks more determined, than ever before

Bringing its school and town, a perfect season of scores

Returning to State, the setter and her mates are up to the task

Capturing the school’s very first volleyball State crown, at last

Bumping the ball, again and again without error

Dreaming of becoming a great volleyball player

The Wildcats secure two more trips to State, to complete her career

Continuing a rich and winning volleyball tradition, without any tears

As her high school career begins its closing, thrilling year

Tasting defeat so very few times, makes opponents fear

“Wow, she hasn’t graduated yet!”—An opposing coach winks

Playing in these final State matches, her skills remain in sync

An incredible volleyball player, will no longer pass and roam

Remembering those times of practicing, in the yard at home

Bumping the ball, again and again without error

Dreaming of becoming a great volleyball player

Just Not Fair

General Motors announces massive job cuts today

Leaving thousands of workers with nothing to say

The announcement surprisingly comes at a bad time

Dimming the lights on a Christmas will not be fine

Factories will close in Maryland, Ohio, and Michigan

Creating turmoil, hardship, and anguish all over again

Corporate leaders plan to take GM on an uncertain road

Failing to sympathize with workers left out in the cold

Layoffs take a tremendous toll on America’s families

Struggling to survive awful and humbling calamities

No longer welcome to arrive for another work shift

Standing outside a closed gate with lives going adrift

People say that the sun will always come up the next day

Looking skyward, displaced workers will only see gray

What does the future hold for the American land?

Praying to God and asking for His helping hands

Thanksgiving Memories

Remembering annual family gatherings from years past

Enjoying special, blessed times which will last and last

Filling Grandma’s packed house with people from near and far

Seeing aunts, uncles, and cousins—as numerous as the stars

Feeling the crisp, autumn air—possibly snow on the ground

Arriving with abundant food and family love to pass around

Pitching in, many helping hands prepare the meal

Eating together on Thanksgiving is a very big deal

Catching up on life from several corners of the state

Thanking the Lord that all arrived safely on this date

Listening to exciting conversation that fills the tiny house

Disappearing from a kitchen corner, a frightened mouse!

Preparing so many favorite and delicious treats

Tasting each will make today an awesome feast

Setting up Grandma’s sizable dining room table with care

Deciding where each family member will sit, here or there

Providing for extra places to eat in the living room

Anticipating that all of us will be eating very soon

Smelling the huge turkey roasting in the oven until finally done

Carving this bird and splitting the wishbone, most delicious fun

Pleasing everyone’s taste buds, with a gathering of yummy dishes

Adding stuffing, mashed potatoes, and yams to everyone’s wishes

Saving room for a sweet symphony of delicious pies

Savoring a slice of pumpkin or many others—Oh my!

Exchanging stories, playing cards, and watching football

Realizing too soon that the time says, “Goodnight to all”

Departing for home, before everyone’s bedtime arrives

Blessing our family time, this thanksgiving feels so alive

Smiling from her large window, Grandma feels so much love

Looking forward to experiencing peace, from the Lord above

A Daughter Born

Anticipating the arrival of a wondrous day

Asking God, “How can this ever be repaid?”

Arriving on an early weekday morn

Witnessing a first daughter born

Experiencing her birth is humbling indeed

Thinking now, there is a little baby to feed

Cradling her in a father’s arms for the first time

Feeling pride swelling deep inside, feels so fine!

Reaching down again to earth, God sends another child

Filling her father’s heart with love so tender and mild

Receiving this daughter is certainly an amazing gift

Making sure that her new life never goes adrift

Realizing now, after so many years of special love

Thanking God again for a “First Noel” from above

Waiting Room Moments

Visiting a surgical center on this rainy dawn

Waiting for the procedure to begin with a yawn

A television broadcasts some unfamiliar show

There is little information for anyone to know

From the wall rack, an ancient magazine is found to read

However, morning thoughts are on other tasks and needs

A beautiful painting displays an image of flowers and spring

Oh, trusting that a hidden cell phone doesn’t begin to ring

From a table, one sees a display about the fall season

It presents an alternative to the visit and its reason

The purpose of today’s appointment is clear to all

Let’s pray the test results will make for standing tall

Living a full, long life generates a very joyous time

Hopefully today’s findings will put all on cloud nine

Teacher’s Final Day

Sitting in my classroom for one final day

Not quite sure what to think or to say

My gratifying journey has been a long, yet proud one

As these days end, my rewarding work will be done

My thoughts go back to ’78 . . . at my first teaching post

When a small community welcomed me, with the most

An unheralded collection of students helped a rookie to grow

Realizing that each day, there was much to learn and know

Supportive colleagues made me feel welcome and at home

We experienced plenty together, and I never felt very alone

My 40-year career continued across three different states

Each stop along the way, filled my mind with distinctive dates

Returning to nearly endless thoughts at this time

Teaching has been a admirable profession of mine

I began writing this poem on my “final day” of teaching.  Little did I know that I would be writing here now.  After 40 years and teaching in three different states, my ride has indeed been a pleasure as well as a challenge.  I am grateful to Montana, Wyoming, and Ohio for allowing me to teach their children.

Early Morning Moments

Photo by Oleksandr Pidvalnyi on Pexels.com

Watching the flame dance in early dawn

Feeling the warmth of a new born fawn

Warmed by an early morning, blazing fire

Viewing a hungry deer jumping over a wire

Enjoying a comforting warmth from the fireplace

Seeing a startled pair running to a new place

Dreaming of a day to stay inside by the flames

Looking out of a window to see deer playing games

Morning Coffee

Smelling the rich aroma on another early morn

Anticipating the initial taste, like being reborn

Certainly one cup will not be enough today

A second cup causes worries to fade away

As Dolly Parton sings, “Pour myself a cup of ambition”

Coffee will definitely be my regular morning addiction

Waking up on a chilly, frosty, dark day

Jumping out of bed to be on one’s way

Hurrying down to the kitchen, what is this?

No coffee!  An empty cup offers no bliss!
