Calvin Miller Quote

We basically have two choices to make in dealing with the mysteries of God.  We can wrestle with Him or we can rest in Him.

From Mark 9:23-24:  “Jesus said to him, ‘If you are able!  All things can be done for the one who believes.’  Immediately the father of the child cried out, ‘I believe; help my unbelief!'”

Calvin Miller (1936-2012) was an American pastor and Christian author.

Monday Memories: Father’s Firm Hand

From Psalm 94:1-2:  “Lord, you God of vengeance, you God of vengeance, shine forth!  Rise up, O judge of the earth; give to the proud what they deserve!”

Holy, perfect Father

Bringing justice for all

Earth’s one, ultimate Judge

Love covers, like rainfall

Truest God of vengeance

Providing blessed Grace

Living high in Heaven

Father’s firm hand, in place

Lives thirst for discipline

Teaching knowledge, His Word

Knowing our hollow thoughts

Empty breath, minds stand blurred

Over the roaring seas

On highest mountaintops

Across fertile valleys

Earth’s Judge shall never stop

Gracious to believers

God’s goodness and kindness

Through our faith, accept Grace

Love overcomes blindness

Judging with righteousness

God’s law rules over all

Vanquishing the wicked

Justice builds righteous walls

From Psalm 98:8-9:  “Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy at the presence of the Lord, for He is coming to judge the earth.  He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.”

John MacArthur Quote

Our need is not to prove God’s faithfulness but to demonstrate our own, by trusting Him both to determine and to supply our needs according to His will.

From 1 Corinthians 4:2:  “Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy.”

John MacArthur (born 1939) is an American pastor and Christian author.

Thomas Watson Quote

Faith believes as if it did not work, and it works as if it did not believe.

From 1 Corinthians 3:8:  “The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and each will receive wages according to their own labor.”

Thomas Watson (1620-1686) was an English Puritan preacher and Christian author.

Charles Stanley Quote

The unexpected, hopeful circumstances that show up in our darkest moments are not accidents but precious assurance builders from the Lord.

From Judges 7:15:  “When Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped, and he returned to the camp of Israel and said, ‘Get up, for the Lord has given the army of Midian into your hand.'”

Charles Stanley (1932-2023) was an American pastor and Christian writer.  He was dedicated to leading a teaching ministry.

The Christian life is a life that consists of following Jesus.

From Matthew 26:24-25:  “Then Jesus told His disciples, ‘If any wish to come after Me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow Me.  For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for My sake will find it.'”

Arthur Walkington (A. W.) Pink (1886-1952) was an English Bible teacher and Christian writer.  Following his death, many of his writings were well-received by readers.  This turnabout established him as an influential evangelical author.

Oswald Chambers Quote

Discipleship is based on devotion to Jesus Christ, not on adherence to a belief or a creed.

From John 21:15-17:  “When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love Me more than these?’  He said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord; You know that I love you.’  Jesus said to him, ‘Feed My lambs.’  A second time He said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love Me?’  He said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord; You know that I love you.’  Jesus said to him, ‘Tend My sheep.’  He said to him the third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love Me?’  Peter felt hurt because He said to him the third time, ‘Do you love Me?’  And he said to Him, ‘Lord, You know everything; You know that I love you.’  Jesus said to him, ‘Feed My sheep.'”

Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) was a Scottish evangelist and Christian teacher.  Following his death from an illness while in Egypt during World War I, his wife took on the task of transcribing the detailed notes she had written from his lectures and sermons.  Gertrude Hobbs Chambers’ efforts resulted in the publication in 1924 of MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST.  I frequently read from this devotional, and it has greatly deepened my faith and understanding of God’s Word.

Ralph Erskine Quote

God’s justice indeed must be satisfied; and there is no way in the world to give satisfaction to God, but by believing in Christ.

From Acts 4:11-12:  “This Jesus is ‘the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the cornerstone.’  There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.”

Ralph Erskine (1685-1752) was a Scottish-born pastor and Christian writer.

The best place to start doing life with God is in small moments.

From Psalm 33:18-19:  “Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His steadfast love, to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive in famine.”

John Ortberg (born 1957) is an American pastor as well as a Christian author and speaker.

Earth’s crammed with heaven, and every common bush afire with God:  But only he who sees takes off his shoes.

From Exodus 3:4-5:  “When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, ‘Moses, Moses!’  And he said, ‘Here I am.’  Then He said, ‘Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.'”

Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) was an English poet of the Victorian era.  Her published works earned popularity in both Great Britain and the United States.
