James Michener (1907-1997)
Character consists of what you do on the third and fourth tries.
An age is called Dark, not because the light fails to shine, but because people refuse to see it.

Great quote by a writing legend! Thank you!

Indeed! Michener is one of America’s finest. I have read CHESAPEAKE, which is based on life along Maryland’s Eastern Shore, where my wife grew up.

Thanks Kathy. I will continue adding more voices from American authors. Sometimes these quotes are enjoyed more when they deal with a particular theme or group of people.

I never looked at the “Dark” Ages that way before… but it’s true, isn’t it. An age is dark because the people fail to see the light – not because the light is not there. A very apt reminder of what’s going on in our world on so many fronts today, isn’t it?

Jan, I agree with your perspective. Why people continue to pursue darkness when God’s light is always on is beyond reason.

I liked this view of character. Many times in life, we need more than one or two tries.

Jim, thanks for sharing some facts about Michener. One of my favorite books is CHESAPEAKE, which is set on Maryland’s Eastern Shore (my wife’s home). I have been to places that relate to some of the scenes in the book.

it’s always fun to read a book that is set somewhere you are familiar with…
