Isaac Watts Quote

Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is Thine arm alone, and our defense secure.  [Taken from the hymn lyrics of “O God, Our Help in Ages Past”]

From Psalm 28:7:  “The Lord is my strength and my shield; in Him my heart trusts; so I am helped, and my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to Him.”

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) was an English pastor, Christian theologian, and prolific writer of hymns.  He produced lyrics for over 750 hymns.

Monday Memories: Defeating Darkness His Way

From Ephesians 6:10-11:  “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His power.  Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

God’s people under attack

Roaring lion on the prowl

Looking for prey to devour

Evil presence brings a scowl

Days becoming the darkest

Running away from the Lord

But, hope waits like eagles’ wings

Holy Spirit comes aboard

Remaining strong with our Lord

Under His mighty power

Wearing protective armor

God’s Word will carry the hour

Our Father’s righteousness speaks

Spirit with us on this day

Withstanding what evil brings

Defeating darkness His way

Time to witness hope-filled faith

Praying daily for action

Quench evil’s flaming arrows

Calling for man’s retraction

Behind His truth, standing firm

Urging others to repent

Proclaiming Gospel of peace

Our Holy God will relent

We put on God by putting on His armor.  Christ himself wore and made the armor, and the Holy Spirit fits it to us and makes it ours.

From Ephesians 6:10-12:  “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His power; put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, for our struggle is not against blood and flesh but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

Joel R. Beeke (born 1952) is an American pastor and Christian theologian.

Origen of Alexandria Quote

Now the true soldiers of Christ must always be prepared to do battle for the truth, and must never, so far as lies with them, allow false convictions to creep in.

From Ephesians 6:13-15:  “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on the evil day and, having prevailed against everything, to stand firm.  Stand, therefore, and belt your waist with truth and put on the breastplate of righteousness and lace up your sandals in preparation for the gospel of peace.”

Origen of Alexandria (c. 185 – c. 253) was also known as Origen Adamantius.  He was a Christian scholar and theologian who spent the first half of his life in Alexandria (Egypt).

Help in Trouble

From Psalm 46:1-3:  “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.”

Drowning in sinfulness

Darkness covers this land

Needing help in trouble

God reaches out His hand

Facing our transgressions

Mighty hand bringing grace

Saving us, all alone

God tapping life’s backspace

Sending love through His Son

Refuge found in one cross

Squashing dark’s empty hope

God triggers evil’s loss

Leaning on His wisdom

Strength flows from His power

Living with righteousness

God rebuilds faith’s tower

Knowing we walk with Him

Lord’s armor covers thee

Praying in Christ’s spirit

God’s mercy sets us free

Stand Firm

From 1 Peter 1:3-4:  “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!  By His great mercy He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.”

Evil’s darkness surrounds

Encroaching with its sin

Life looks to turn around

Wolf hiding in sheepskin

Fraud’s light leads some astray

Moving away from God

Grace opens its doorway

Christ shatters hell’s facade

Resurrection’s new hope

Building faith’s foundation

Salvation, Christ’s tow rope

Father’s promised station

Word speaks of Lord’s power

Calling all to stand firm

Each and every hour

Holy Spirit confirms

Faith anchored in His care

Wearing God’s armored vest

All times, kneeling in prayer

Mercy braves each test

A Christian life is an unending engagement on the battlefield.

From Ephesians 6:10-11:  “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His power.  Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

Watchman Nee (1903-1972) was a Chinese church leader and Christian teacher.  He authored a collection of Christian books, and he endured persecution for his beliefs.  Ultimately, he died while being imprisoned for the final twenty years of his life.

We are never out of reach of Satan’s devices, so we must never be without the whole armor of God.

From Ephesians 6:10-11:  “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His power.  Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
