Many Christians today are trying to find a shortcut to a closer relationship with the Father.  But intimacy takes times and effort; knowing God better is a lifelong pursuit.

From Psalm 63:5-7:  “My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast, and my mouth praises you with joyful lips when I think of you on my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.”

To get the most out of our time in God’s Word, we first need to prepare our heart.

From 1 Samuel 3:10:  “Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’  And Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.'”

The life we create is useful to God only if it is consistent with Jesus Christ’s foundation.

From 1 Corinthians 3:10-11:  “According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it.  Each builder must choose with care how to build on it.  For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ.”

The sufferings that the Lord allows in our life are given to us for His good purpose.  Whenever God allows suffering to remain, He gives grace to endure it.

From 2 Corinthians 12:7-9:  “Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated.  Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.'”

Good intentions aren’t enough to make a proposed plan right.  Learn to appreciate your conscience–God’s gift of an internal warning system–and heed its admonitions.

From 1 Timothy 1:18-19:  “I am giving you these instructions, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies made earlier about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, having faith and a good conscience.  By rejecting conscience, certain persons have suffered shipwreck in the faith.”

Whenever you feel defeated, remember this:  As believers, we have all the power needed to live as God desires, because He has given us His Holy Spirit.

From John 14:15-17:  “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.  And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever.  This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him.  You know Him, because He abides with you, and He will be in you.”

Reaching a healthy old age is a laudable goal, but nothing is more meaningful than receiving the Savior and the gift of eternity in His presence.

From 1 John 5:11-12:  “And this is the testimony:  God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.  Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

If we submit to whatever road the Lord has chosen for us, His Spirit will guide us and–slowly but surely–produce His fruit.

From Romans 15:13:  “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

The only true remedy for discouragement is to put our hope in God.  He alone can give us the courage to persevere.

From Romans 8:28:  “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.”

For us, jealousy isn’t attractive, but for God, it’s a holy attribute.  God is unhappy when we worship anyone besides Him.  Only He deserves our praise.

From James 4:5-6:  “Or do you suppose that it is for nothing that the scripture says, ‘God yearns jealously for the spirit that He has made to dwell in us’?  But He gives all the more grace.”
