Oswald Chambers Quote

A man’s obedience is to what he sees to be a need; our Lord’s obedience was to the will of His Father.

From Hebrews 10:9-10:  “Then He added, ‘See, I have come to do Your will.’  He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God’s will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) was a Scottish evangelist and Christian teacher.  Following his death from an illness while in Egypt during World War I, his wife took on the task of transcribing the detailed notes she had written from his lectures and sermons.  Gertrude Hobbs Chambers’ efforts resulted in the publication in 1924 of MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST.  I frequently read from this devotional, and it has greatly deepened my faith and understanding of God’s Word.

When you focus on problems, you get more problems.  When you focus on possibilities, you have more opportunities.

You were designed for accomplishment, engineered for success, and endowed with the seeds of greatness.

Zig Ziglar (1926-2012) was an American author and motivational speaker.  He inspired many with his wit, optimism, and Christian faith.

What is really important in education is not that the child learns this and that, but that the mind is matured, that energy is aroused.

Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.

Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) was a Danish theologian, philosopher, and poet.  He was believed to be the one of the earliest existentialist philosophers.

The confession of the thief on the cross was both a first and final one.  But . . . Christ received it.  Maybe you never heard your loved one confess Christ, but who’s to say Christ didn’t?

From 2 Peter 3:9:  “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance.”

The President of the United States should strive to be always mindful of the fact that he serves his party best who serves his country best.  [Taken from Hayes Inaugural Address on March 5, 1877]

The progress of society is mainly the improvement in the condition of the workingmen of the world.

Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893) served as the American President from 1877-1881.

Vance Havner Quote

If you are a Christian, you are not a citizen of this world trying to get to heaven; you are a citizen of heaven making your way through this world.

From Ephesians 2:18-20:  “For through Him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father.  So then, you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone.”

Vance Havner (1901-1986) was an American pastor and Christian author.  During his many years of service to the Lord, he preached throughout America.

Mary Oliver Quotes

I believe in kindness.  Also in mischief.  Also in singing, especially when singing is not necessarily prescribed.

For poems are not words, after all, but fires for the cold, ropes let down to the lost, something as necessary in the pockets of the hungry.

Mary Oliver (1935-2019) was a best-selling American poet, who received many honors for her work.  Her love of nature can be found in much of her writing, and it resulted in honors from the National Book Award in 1992 and Pulitzer Prize in 1984.

Oswald Chambers Quote

We act like pagans in a crisis, only one out of a crowd is daring enough to bank his faith in the character of God.

From Luke 9:61-62:  “Another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.’  And Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.'”

True wealth is not measured in money or status or power.  It is measured in the legacy we leave behind for those we love and those we inspire.

Grant me courage to serve others; for in service there is true life.

I can’t imagine living a life without God in my life.  He’s my confidant, He’s my advisor, He’s my director.

From Psalm 25:4-5:  “Make me to know Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths.  Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; for You I wait all day long.”

Reba McEntire (born 1955) is an American country music singer and actress.  She has earned the nickname of “Queen of Country.”
