The woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those who sang the best.
A true conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers, but borrowed from his children.
John James Audobon (1785-1851) was a French-American artist, naturalist, and ornithologist. His most famous work, entitled “The Birds of America”, captured North American birds with a detailed collection of 435 hand-colored prints.
I love both of those quotations. The first struck me especially. I recently downloaded the Merlin app from the Cornell birding site. You can use your phone to identify birds from their song. On Sunday morning, I gave it a test run in the east Texas woods, and while I only heard “birdsong” (except for the cardinals and doves, which I know), it identified eight birdsongs in a flash. Not only that, I was able to save the recordings to listen to again while getting familiar with the calls.
I never saw a single one of the birds that was singing, but it was a pleasure to know what was out there.
