When we are suffering, only Christ’s perspective can replace our resentment with rejoicing.  Our whole perspective changes when we catch a glimpse of the purpose of Christ in it all.

From Matthew 11:28-30:  “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

When you persevere through a trial, God gives you a special measure of insight.  You become the recipient of the favor of God as He gives to you, and those who suffer with you, something that would not be learned otherwise.

From Psalm 55:18:  “He will redeem me unharmed from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me.”

The Pharisees were great on loud, dogmatic commands, lengthy requirements, and drawn-out demands.  Oh, how they loved the sound of their own words!  But when it came to doing, they struck out.  In other words, don’t talk compassion; lend a hand. Don’t pound a pulpit about generosity; give.  Just do it.

From James 1:22-24:  “But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves.  For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like.”

God would love to piece together the shattered fragments of your life.  But He is waiting . . . graciously waiting until the time is right.  Until you recognize your need for Him . . . He’s waiting.

From Proverbs 15:23:  “To make an apt answer is a joy to anyone, and a word in season, how good it is!”

Personally, I think a healthy sense of humor is determined by at least three abilities:

  • The ability to laugh at our mistakes
  • The ability to accept justified criticism–and get over it
  • The ability to interject (or at least enjoy) wholesome humor when surrounded by a tense, heated situation

From Proverbs 15:13:  “A glad heart makes a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.”

Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what people do or say.  It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill.

From Philippians 4:8:  “Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Our Lord is ultimately acquainted with all our ways.  Darkness and light are alike to Him.  Not one of us is hidden from His sight.  He sees it all.  He knows our frame.  He remembers we are dust . . .  Best of all, He loves us still.

From Proverbs 10:12:  “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.”

Nobody is a whole chain.  Each one is a link.  But take away one link and the chain is broken.  We need each other.  You need someone and someone needs you.  Isolated islands, we’re not.

From Colossians 1:9-10:  “For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God.”

Through it all, God is with us, leading us, teaching us, humbling us, preparing us.

From Psalm 91:1-2:  “You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.'”

Acceptance is taking from God’s hand absolutely anything He gives, looking into His face in trust and thanksgiving, knowing that the confinement of the situation we’re in is good and for His glory.

From Isaiah 43:18-19:  “Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old.  I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?  I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
