Forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember. We change the memory of our past into a hope for our future.
From Ephesians 4:32: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.”
Lewis B. Smedes (1921-2002) was an American author and Christian theologian.
Fabulous quote by Smedes. This is part is outstanding: “…forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember.” Sometimes we’d rather forget offenses, but we can’t! 🙂

Nancy, thank you for sharing. Smedes has written quite a bit about the topic of forgiveness. Perhaps more of his perspective will grace my blog. God’s peace be with you.
