William Penn (1644-1718) was an English writer and religious thinker.  This influential Quaker founded the province of Pennsylvania in the American colonies under British rule.

Love is the hardest lesson in Christianity; but, for that reason, it should be most our care to learn it.

From Mark 12:29-31:  “Jesus answered, ‘The first is, Hear, O Israel:  the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.  The second is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  There is no other commandment greater than these.'”

The jealous are troublesome to others, but a torment to themselves.

From 1 Corinthians 3:1-3:  “And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ.  I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food.  Even now you are still not ready, for you are still of the flesh.  For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations?”
