I love the melodies in the Old Testament, how preachers highlight them when they read from the Scripture. But I was influenced forever by the New Testament. I love the Beatitudes, informing us that the meek shall inherit the earth.
From Matthew 5:1-12: “When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. Then He began to speak, and taught them, saying:”
- Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
- Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
- Blessed for those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
- Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
- Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
- Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
- Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on My account.
- Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
When I think of the Beatitudes, I think of them basically saying- Blessed are those who realize they need Jesus 🙂

In 2011, I toured Israel, and a woman from our group read the Beatitudes on the mountain overlooking the Sea of Galilee, where it’s believed Jesus spoke those words. I feel something in my eye just remembering—what a moving moment in time!

I am taking a little time off and planning to start a Masters program in January. In the meantime, I have a long-term sub position for a good friend of mine on maternity leave, so I will finish out this semester, and I’ll need to sub 18 days second semester to count as year 21 toward my retirement. Overall, it’s great (except the pay).
